There is an assumption by some mothers that certain academies are better than others and when it comes down to it, there is only a handful of academies that actually do a good job. Before you decide on your child's future, all I ask is that you do the research and ask questions!
It's a travesty that some pretentious moms shop hagwons like they shop for a bag: they only look for brand names. They do not take the time to consider the actual quality, cost and true value of a good education.
When you are in the market for a hagwon, follow these simple steps:
1. Ask around. Don't ask friends (they are afterall bias) Ask people in your church, and community and most likely, you will begin to hear news of some good academies.
2. Do your research. Paying out money just for a brand is simply foolhardy and not a smart use of your resources. Go to parent and education websites and find out what others say about so and so hagwon.
3. Visit the school and ask questions. It is after all your child's education you must consider. You don't want to be throwing your hard earned money.
4. Ask to see their credentials. Mothers, you would be amazed how many teachers teach iBT or TEPS and yet when asked if they have taken the test, you will not get a straight answer. Why? Most have not taken the test. While there, ask to see a couple of their iBT or TEPS score. After all, would a good hagwon have anything to hide?
5. Don't get caught up in name value or cute name academies like I ADORE ENGLISH or Cubbie's Playground. They are simply marketing tools. They are trying to lure you in. You will only find out later that you have been "FISHED."
A1-Legacy recent;y had their parent orientation on 11/30/2010. In our meeting, more than 200 parents came along with hagwon spies to find out what we were doing. Evidently , mothers and spies liked it so much that the hagown (to which I won't mention their name but will give you a clue. They go by three initials) decided to EMULATE our program. In other words, they are copying what we are doing.
How do I know? Well that particular school already had their parent consultation before A1's and low and behold, there came a curriculum plan that look like ours right after on the following day. HMMM. Suspicious? You better believe it.
It just goes to show you that we are doing something right. Let it be known, we don't mind. It only proves where " X-XXXX-XXXXXXX" gets their ideas and inspiration. If our vision and planning can help your child as well as other academies improve their program, then we truly are living up to our namesake of creating a LEGACY.
